Recipe: Whole Grain Cuban Sandwich

If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, why not make it a Cubano? This Latin variation of a grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich is simple to make and so delicious to eat. Try making this whole grain Cuban sandwich by Chef Elsie Ramos.


Whole Grain Cuban Sandwich

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes


For the Cuban sandwich

  • 1 –3 pounds pork loin
  • 1 pound smoked turkey slices
  • 6 whole grain baguettes
  • 6 slices of low-fat Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup of fresh chopped cilantro
  • 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ sour pickle sliced thin two slices per sandwich
  • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard

Seasoning for the pork loin

  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. curry
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. salt


Cilantro oil:

  1. Blend cilantro leaves, olive oil, and 1 tsp. of salt to create a pesto
  2. Set aside in a bowl

Prepping and cooking pork loin:

  1. Mix the seasonings for the pork loin in a bowl. Rub mixture over pork loin
  2. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, place in a baking dish, and refrigerate overnight
  3. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Remove plastic wrap from pork loin and discard. Keep pork loin in baking dish
  4. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes while pan-searing the pork loin to turn each side brown
  5. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before slicing

To prep a Cuban sandwich:

  1. Brush the cilantro oil on the inside of each multigrain baguette
  2. Drizzle about 1 tsp. of Dijon mustard on one side
  3. Layer each bread with two slices of the pork loin and two slices of turkey; add a slice of cheese, and then top with two pickle slices
  4. Using a panini press, brush the outsides of your baguette with the cilantro oil and press until golden and crisp

Serve immediately and enjoy! Serves six.
