Summer is right around the corner, so it’s important to protect yourself from the sun. Make sure you stay healthy in the summer heat, and understand how to treat your skin if you get burned.

Get Cool Fast,
and Moisturize

 

Make a cold compress by soaking a wash cloth in cool water, (don’t apply just ice, as it could damage your skin) or take a cool bath or a quick dip in a pool for relief. Then, put aloe vera on afterward to moisturize. For even more soothing relief, keep your aloe in the refrigerator before applying.

 

Drink Water and
Alleviate Swelling

 

Many people experience dehydration after sunburn, because some fluid has been drained from your body. Make sure to hydrate, even when you are not thirsty. Try taking small sips of cold water throughout the day. If the swelling is bad, an anti-inflammatory medicine like aspirin can help too.

 

Eliminate Caffeine,
Alcohol, and Sugar

 

Caffeine, alcohol, and excess sugar can increase your chances of becoming dehydrated, as they all cause the body to lose more fluid. Eliminating these things can help to alleviate symptoms of sunburn, especially for the first few days.

 

Increase Your
Vitamin C Intake

 

Increasing your vitamin C intake has been proven to heal skin tissue. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight damaging free radicals in your body caused by the sun’s UV rays, and can even help in combination with sunscreen to prevent further sunburn.

 

Treat Blisters
with Care

 

If your skin blisters, do not pop them. That can increase a chance of infection and make the burn worse. Wrap a gauze bandage around the area instead. If you have a fever, extreme pain for 48 hours or more, or a severe burn (those that cover over 15 percent of the body), call your provider.
